Lana Meisner, wife of Eagles bassist Randy Meisner, died on Sunday – the result of a a fatal gunshot from a rifle that accidentally discharged.
Meisner was moving a rifle that was stored inside of a case in a closet inside of the couple’s Studio City home, reports the LA Times. When she lifted the case, another item inside shifted and hit the trigger causing the weapon to fire.
The incident, which happened about 7 p.m., happened about 90 minutes after police responded to a domestic call at the Meisner’s home:
Around 5:30 p.m., North Hollywood patrol officers responded to a radio call of a woman asking for police assistance for a possibly intoxicated male suspect. The officers took a domestic violence incident report and left the location, police said.
TMZ reports that Randy Meisner was waiving a BB gun and “acting erratically”.
Patrol officers returned to the address an hour and a half later to respond to a call of a shooting. Lana Meisner was pronounced dead at the scene.
Randy Meisner, who left the Eagles following the band’s 1977 tour, had been married to his wife for nearly 20 years. He is best known for co-writing and singing the Eagles’ One of These Nights single “Take It to the Limit.”
Meisner was placed under court-ordered 24-hour supervision following a January 2015 incident where he allegedly threatened murder-suicide with an AK-47 and pills, according to Rolling Stone. In July 2015, Meisner’s friend James Newton filed documents to attain a temporary conservatorship over the former Eagles bassist, with Newton claiming Meisner was diagnosed as bipolar and suffered from “suicidal ideations.”
Meisner’s lawyer called Newton’s claims “widely overblown.”
Authorities say that Randy Meisner was cooperative throughout the investigation.
