A San Bernardino man was arrested after police pulled his car over on the 10 Freeway in Cathedral City and found a woman who had been shot and a baby covered in blood in his car.

Willie Roy Smith, 25, was pulled over near Date Palm Drive on Saturday at about 4 p.m. after reports of a reckless driver, reports KMIR.

When officers approached Smith’s vehicle, they discovered a woman lying bleeding on the rear passenger floorboard. The woman had been shot twice.

Police also saw a 3-month old infant in the back seat covered in the woman’s blood. The infant was found to not be injured.

The woman was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center, where she remains hospitalized in stable condition, according to police. The baby was placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.

“We are still trying to determine exactly where the shooting occurred,” Lt. Glen Haas with the Cathedral City Police Department told KESQ. “There was evidence found inside the car that the shooting occurred inside the car but we still don’t know where that shooting actually happened..”

Smith was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, domestic violence and child endangerment.
