The 2018 election just got weirder.
Voters in California might be voting on whether California should be split into three states after backers of the plan got 600,0000 signatures – which is way above the required 365,880 – to qualify it for the ballot, reports CBS Sacramento.
“CAL 3” is backed by venture capitalist Tim Draper, and would split California into three states with a central state including the areas of Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey and San Benito counties. The new southern state would be made up of Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Kern, Kings, Fresno, Tulare, Inyo, Madera and Mono counties. The remaining counties (there are 40, so I won’t list) would be the northern state.
And while it’s hard to see this plan passing, the proposal would allow the new states to name themselves and the way that works nowadays, you know at least one would be known as Statey McStateFace.
Draper says the split would solve many of California’s problems including education, taxes, and infrastructure – but opponents of the plan say it’s unworkable and, well, crazy.
“The notion that smaller is beautiful has not played out with any foundation in facts,” Democratic consultant Steven Maviglio told the San Jose Mercury News, referring to Rhode Island and the District of Columbia which are regularly criticized for mismanagement.
“It’s completely unworkable and ridiculous,” Maviglio said. “It’s kind of a shame with so many important issues facing the state that this wacky idea might appear on the ballot.
