A Palm Springs man was arrested on Thursday after police say he resisted arrest and assaulted a K-9.

PSPD officers stopped a vehicle on Calle Paul Road about 4:42 pm, according to a news release. The driver, identified by police as Brian Barker, refused to comply with officer’s commands and resisted arrest when officers attempted to detain him.

As a result, several non-lethal force options were used which included a K-9 and a less lethal impact weapon. Barker assaulted the K9, Max, during the violent encounter. Max suffered minor injuries during the assault.

Barker, 43, was eventually taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries.

A probation search of the vehicle and residence was conducted. The search resulted in Barker being in possession of ammunition which he is prohibited from possessing, as he is convicted felon. Resisting police officers and possessing ammunition are also violations of Barker’s probation terms.

Barker was arrested for felon in possession of ammunition, assaulting a police K9, resisting, delaying or obstructing a peace officer, and probation violation.
