The temperatures are warming up, the snowbirds are leaving, and soon just about every road in Palm Springs will be under construction – summer is a hell of a time in the Coachella Valley.
The City of Palm Springs has announced three separate traffic construction projects all getting underway on Monday, May 6 – and all that may cause delays for you as you just try to get to work.
The projects are:
Adding a second left turn lane for northbound Gene Autry Trail to westbound Vista Chino
During construction left turn lanes WILL NOT be allowed on Westbound Vista Chino to southbound Gene Autry Trail or Northbound Gene Autry Trail to westbound Vista Chino. Left turns WILL be allowed on: Southbound Gene Autry Trail to eastbound Vista Chino and Eastbound Vista Chino to northbound Gene Autry Trail.
Here’s the big thing though, traffic lanes will be reduced from two lanes to one lane in all directions at certain times and the city states that “Drivers are advised to avoid the intersection and find alternative routes during construction, which is expected to be substantially complete my mid-June with relief of some traffic controls.
The city expects the entire project should be finished by the end of June.
The Indian Canyon Drive: Two-Way Traffic Conversion Project
Yup, they are actually doing this thing. Sigh. Anyway, the project will convert Indian Canyon Drive from Alejo south to Camino Parocela from oneway northbound to two-way northbound and southbound traffic.
All traffic signals between Tachevah Drive and Camino Parocela will be renovated or replaced. The city says there will be intermittent lane closures throughout the area with at least one lane of traffic open at all times and all lanes reopening at the end of each work day. The city will open the streets for VillageFest on Thursdays. The project is expected to be complete in late fall of 2019, but yeah, we will see about that.
Palm Canyon Traffic Signal and Downtown Pedestrian Improvements
Construction crews will be doing “exploratory digging for traffic signal pole locations” at all intersections between Tachevah Drive and Ramon Road on Palm Canyon Drive. The project is expected to continue for six weeks and will see intermittent lane closures and traffic delays are expected. This is just phase one as after the project is done, new signal poles will be ordered and installed sometime in late 2019 or early 2020.
