Coachella Valley History Museum: Dates, Desks and a Different Kind of Desert Outing
There is more to the Coachella Valley’s backstory than resorts, golf and the time your friend lost their car at a festival.
The Coachella Valley History Museum in Indio gives you a place to spend some time with that longer story. Its campus combines historic buildings, exhibits and outdoor displays, with subjects ranging from Cahuilla culture to agriculture and everyday life.
What to look for
The museum’s exhibition guide offers several good starting points.
The Smiley-Tyler House contains exhibits on the Cahuilla people, water and agriculture, railroads and more, including a kitchen depicting the 1930s and 1940s. It is a useful place to start connecting the valley’s landscape with the people who have lived and worked here.
The Date Museum follows the crop’s history and its arrival in the Coachella Valley. If your relationship with dates has mostly involved a milkshake, consider this the background reading.
Then there is the 1909 Indio Schoolhouse, with student desks and slate boards. A classroom without a single charging cable has a certain appeal.
Because the museum includes outdoor areas as well as buildings, plan for a campus visit rather than assuming the whole outing takes place in one indoor gallery.
Hours deserve a second look
The museum is at 82616 Miles Avenue in Indio. As checked October 2, 2026, its September–May schedule is 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Monday, and 1–4 p.m. Sunday.
Yes, Monday is on that list. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are not. Give the calendar a glance before turning a good museum idea into a drive to a closed museum.
June and July have reduced hours, and the museum closes in August. Holiday exceptions also apply; check the museum’s current visitor information before heading over.
Admission
The museum currently lists $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and free admission for visitors 17 and younger. Check the same visitor-information page for additional admission benefits and any changes.
For a family outing or a break from the usual visitor circuit, it is an easy idea to keep on your list. Just put it on the right day.
