A fire broke out at an abandoned Ralph’s supermarket in Indio on Wednesday.
The fire was reported a little before 12:30 pm on Highway 111.
40 firefighters were on site battling the blaze, according to a Cal Fire news release.
As the fire was near Indio High School, students were evacuated from classrooms.
“A fire in Indio near Indio High School has prompted the evacuation of classrooms,” reads a DSUSD statement from Mary Perry (via KESQ). “Students and staff have been relocated to the football field. Water has been provided. Air quality is a concern and early release is being considered. ”
