Indio Police handed out over 40 citations to pedestrians Monday as a part of what they called a Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Operation.
44 citations were issued to pedestrians for failing to yield the right of way to a vehicle on the roadway and another four were given to drivers for failing to yield to a pedestrian that was in a crosswalk, according to a release from the department.
The patrols took place in areas of the city that had been identified as troubled spots over the past five years, reports The Desert Sun.
In 2016, 29 people died after being struck by a vehicle in the Coachella Valley, notes the newspaper. Six of them were in Indio.
