Giant Rock is one of the largest freestanding boulders in the world and a major landmark in high desert folklore. It played a central role in mid-20th-century UFO conventions and desert mysticism gatherings.

Today, it’s an informal stop surrounded by open land, dirt roads, and a lot of quiet. There are no signs, amenities, or fences.

Gubler Orchids is a long-running, family-owned orchid nursery that feels completely out of place in the high desert. Inside the greenhouses, the air is humid and filled with thousands of orchids grown on-site.

It’s free to visit (though a tour of the place beyond the initial showroom will cost you $5). It’s easy to browse and makes for a surprisingly calming stop between desert landmarks. Be sure to have non-skid shoes as you will traverse some potential slippery spots on your tour.
