You could be voting on a proposal in 2018 that would split California into three states.
The initiative, which can now be allowed to collect signatures in order to show up on the ballot, is being proposed by Silicon Valley venture capitalist Timothy Draper, who tried in 2014 to turn California into six states, according to the LA Times.
The three Californias would be Southern California (San Diego, Orange County, the Coachella Valley, the Inland Empire), California (Los Angeles up to Monterey County), and Northern California (Bay Area, Sacramento, etc.).
“The citizens of the whole state would be better served by three smaller state governments while preserving the historical boundaries of the various counties, cities, and towns,” Draper wrote in a statement of findings, notes the Times.
But opponents say it would be too disruptive.
“Creating three new governments three new legislatures, three new governors and then having to disrupt what we have as a state all our prison systems, our higher education systems,” political analyst Steven Maviglio told KGO.
In order to qualify for the ballot, the initiative must get 365,880 signatures.
