National parks are a thing of beauty. And what keeps them beautiful? Well, people not drawing dumb shit all over them for one. A 23-year-old woman learned that important lesson this week as she was banned from every National Park in America for two years after defacing rock formations in at least seven different national parks.
During a 26-day stretch in 2014, Casey Nocket visited seven different national parks – and left her mark in at least 5 of them. While there she drew her social media handle “Creepytings” in the parks and posted on Instagram.
The thing is, that is not only a moronic thing to do…it is a crime.
“The defendant’s defacement of multiple rock formations showed a lack of respect for the law and our shared national treasures,” acting U.S. Atty. Phillip A. Talbert told the Los Angeles Times. “The National Park Service has worked hard to restore the rock formations to their natural state, completing clean-up efforts in five of the seven national parks.”
Nocket targeted Death Valley, Yosemite, Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, Zion National Park in Utah and Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. While crews were able to remove the graffiti from most of the parks, it has yet to be fully removed from Crater Lake and Death Valley two years later.
Nocket pleaded not guilty to seven counts of defacing national parks. She was given 2 years probation, must complete 200 hours of community service, will need to pay a fine, and has been banned from all national parks during her probation.
