One of the biggest weekends of football is here and you are looking for something tasty for you (and your mooching guests) to sip on while watching. Well, you have come to the right place. Here are 3 crowd pleasing punches (plus a killer cocktail) that you can make beforehand and, best of all, let everyone serve themselves so you can watch the games (just keep an eye on Uncle Bob or he will drink it all!!).
Note: a couple of recipes call for Oleo-saccharum, do not be afraid! The name sounds fancy, but it is easy to make. Just take the zest of citrus and muddle it with sugar, let that sit in a warm place for up to an hour then remove the zest and add water. Equal parts sugar and water
Packer Potion
Lemon Oleo-saccrahum (8oz white sugar, 2 lemons)*
16oz 100proof bourbon or rye
3oz lemon juice
4 cups cold water
Add ice. I like large ice block, but it’s your call. This punch is strong, powerful, and balanced just like Aaron Rodgers, Eddie Lacy, and that strong Packer defense.
Patriot Punch
Oleo-saccrahum of 12oz raw sugar, zest of 4 lemons
2 1/2 cups of Batavia Arrack, I always sub this out for some aged rum. Dark 5-10year rum is best.
5 cups black tea. It works with hot or cold tea. You have options with this one. Pull a Brady. Read your crowd, its mood, and call the right play at the line.
Dr. Luck’s Colt Cocktail
This punch revives the spirits, helps digestion, and restores lost appetite…according to legend anyway.
2 quarts water
1 pint lime juice
12oz white sugar, combine, and let sugar dissolve.
3 pints of your favorite Brandy
Grate some nutmeg to taste
There Will Be Blood
Last, but definitely not least, are the defending champs the Seattle Seahawks. This drink, not a punch, is a favorite of mine and properly describes the Seahawks style of play: There Will Be Blood.
How else would one describe Seattle’s dominating defense and Beast Mode?
2oz old Grand Dad Bourbon
3/4 oz dark creme de cacoa
3/4 blood orange juice
Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass
Finally here are my predictions:
Colts @ Patriots: Brady and co. will too much for Luck and the Colts this year. I have the Patriots winning 31-14.
Packers @ Seahawks: This one was tough for me. I like the Packers in this game but with Rodgers still hurting and playing on one leg in Seattle with those fans, I don’t like their chances. Seattle wins 24-20
What are your predictions. More importantly, what are you sippin’ during the game?
