Facebook – a for profit company that coaxes you to login everyday to see photos of your friends’ food, babies, and vacations in order to serve you up a ton of ads – takes a weird turn every four years when your feed becomes full of memes, links, and hot takes about the political election. So what is the best thing to say with someone who posts something you disagree with?
Nothing.
Seriously, just let it go.
This pains me to say, because I love having a good back and forth – but, the problem is: have you ever had a Facebook friend reply to your comment with, “Wow. I did not think of things that way. Thank you so much for showing me the light”? Nope! No one has. Ever.
I know this can be tough. You have your beliefs you feel strongly about. But, and this is important, so do they. The problem is that no one is going to budge from their stance (no matter who is wrong) and both of you are just going to get pissed off and waste a bunch of time for no reason.
Now, this isn’t to say that there is not room for political discourse in this country. In fact, it would be great if all of us – and especially our elected officials – had real discussions about what is going on in this country and came together to compromise and get shit done every once in a while.
So if you really feel strongly about an issue or a candidate. then vote, volunteer, or get crazy and run for office yourself – just don’t waste your time arguing all night about TPP on Facebook with some guy you forgot you were even friends with.
