By now you have seen (and heard all of your friends bitch about) how expensive gasoline is these days. Well, bad news, friend. The price of gas is expected to get be over four bucks a gallon this summer so there’s goes that plan of taking a nice, long road trip.
Via USA Today:
Among the reasons the gas prices in these cities are so high is the gas tax in California is among the highest in the nation at $0.467 a gallon. The state also mandates a level of gas standards for “clear gas,” which is the highest standard among all states.
Regardless of the reason California gas prices are high, they may reach a level at which they undermine consumer spending. This could become worse because a number of experts believe the price in the state will top $4 during the heavy driving season in the summer.
High gas prices promise to be a hot topic this summer – and not just because it sucks to sign over your entire paycheck to fill up at the pump. With it being an election year, plenty of candidates for various offices are calling for a repeal of the state’s gas tax – with
Republican gubernatorial candidate John Cox predicting that gas could hit the five dollar mark soon.
“There’s going to be an absolute revolt because I gotta tell you gasoline in the state is going to go to almost $5 a gallon by the end of summer,” Cox told FOX Business.
And while a gas tax repeal would bring the prices down, it’s not quite clear how the state would then pay for the transit projects that are to be funded from the tax revenues.
And while we wait for the politics of the gas tax to play out, in the meantime you can find the cheapest spots for gas in the Coachella Valley here.
