Prosecutors have announced that they will seek the death penalty for John Hernandez Felix, the man who they say killed two Palm Springs police officers.

“This was a heinous crime involving the murders of two police officers who were gunned down simply because they were police officers,” Riverside District Attorney Mike Hestrin said in a news release. “The victims in this case were responding to a call for service and died in the line of duty protecting our community.”

Felix was arrested after police say he shot Officers Jose “Gil” Vega and Lesley Zerebny with armor-piercing bullets. A third officer was also wounded in the shooting.

A third police officer was also wounded in the shooting.

Zerebny’s father, David Kling,  stated earlier this month that he and other family members supported the D.A. seeking the death penalty.

“That’s what he deserves,” Kling said earlier this month. “The death penalty law was written for that type of person.”
